THE CULT’s Commentary:
Still. Trying. To. catch our breath from this KORE class. Yes, it was that kind of HIIT class. The kind when you can’t walk up the stairs or lift your arm to hold your phone against your cheek. You will definitely need to hit up your local Cryo spot to release the pain. The big difference of this class compared to other HIIT classes is that everything is beat based. WTF is beat based you ask? It means that every move is specifically choreographed to the beat of the music. You know we talk about his A LOT. It really does make such a difference (especially during a HIIT class) that the moves match the beat of the music - if not anything but to give you that extra push and motivation. Plus, it is BLASTING giving us major nyc clubbing vibes. We’re not not into it.
Moving to the class setup/style of the class, each person gets their own bench accompanied by every piece of strength training equipment you can image - kettlebells, dumbbells, resistance bands, medicine balls. Like most classes, you target the legs, than arms, then abs. It is truly full body a combination of cardio, free weights, resistance and High Intensity Interval Training. Besides the endless burpees, the real kicker for us were the resistance band thrusters. And we were not the only ones in class who thought so. Everyone was seriously struggling with being able to place a resistance band under their feet and bringing it up over their head repetitively. It may be why our arms are sore many days later…. To polish it off they have eucalyptus towels waiting to wipe your sweat and cool you down post class. Don’t worry ladies, though this studio may be small in size, they are equip with showers to make sure you can continue your beat based sweat onto the nearby clubbing scene.
THE BREAK DOWN:
1. STUDIO SPACE + AMBIANCE: 7.6
MAJOR Meatpacking clubby vibes. You know the ones we’re talking about ;). We’re talking lots of black lights, neon and dark rooms. One thing not so club like aspect is the freezing studio. We thought it was just us and could have in part been that our spot was right by an AC. But, we did a little research and was not the only one with this comment. We hate when the studio is too hot but damn this was colder than the refrigerator studio at BRRRN.
2. STUDIO EQUIPMENT: 7.8
I felt like we had so much equipment at our bench, and didn't even use half of the equipment in the studio in the class. There is a full line of TRX bands in the back and each station is set up with a bench, resistance band, kettlebell and dumbbells. They’ve got the WORKS. Not to mention everything is really well kept. Cult Approved.
3. INSTRUCTOR(s): 8.1
The instructors are like the club hype men. They match the heavy beats of the music and push you to your very edge. Our instructor made us WORK for it. Like, even when we felt like we needed to give up to keep our limbs intact, they would yell out some motivational/intimidating notion to push past your breaking point. They were very skillful in their demonstrations and were intent on making sure the class has perfected form.
4. SWEAT FACTOR: 8.7
This is one of those classes where you leave completely red in the face. You can’t fake not showering if you are trying to meet friends for dinner afterwards. Plan for that shower. For this review, we’re also adding in an “out of breath” factor. This is due to that fact that we were seriously out of breath for the better part of the class.
5. MUSIC: 8.5
BEAT. BASED. WORKOUT.
By far our favorite part of this studio. I don't know about you, but when I'm working out to the beat of the music it just give you that extra UMPH. Plus, it really shows the strategic planning of the instructor or in this case studio. Not everyone can follow the beat - crazy we know. But, there have been many a time where were in class and the music is more of the background of the class and doesn’t always match what exercises we are doing. Kind of throws us off. So we are especially thankful for the music in this class.
6. FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH - $$$: 8.0
This is an awesome full body workout. We would definitely recommend for any lovers of Barry’s and/or Fhitting Room. But, come prepared! This class is not for the faint of heart. If you’re not willing to put in a lot of work maybe opt out for some yoga instead. Namaste.
